The Bristol Downs and Avon Gorge
Names and Places of Interest On the Bristol Downs & in the Avon Gorge
To use the Google map:
- Zoom in/out with the bar on the top left hand side. Double clicking the map will also zoom in.
This will reveal parked cars (some illegally on the grass by the Peregrine Watch), even individual people
and football players.
- The four arrows above the bar move the map, you can also drag it to expose hidden parts.
- Clicking the center of the four arrows resets the map
- The numbered green icons correspond to the items in the right hand side list.
- Holding the mouse over one of the numbered icons shows the item name - but you may
need to move the map to read some of these.
- Clicking on an icon brings up a larger dialogue with any comments from Downswatch.
- You can choose to look at the Road Map only, the Satellite View only, or these views combined as a Hybrid.
- The Hybrid Map shows the names of the surrounding roads and
places. Note that the Downs vare called "Westbury Park" by Google, and there are some other errors!
- Human activity is very evident, the Downs are scarred by various activities
with a heavy network of paths, football pitches,
the regions used for fairs, and car parking. Thus
of particular concern to Downswatch are the regions expropriated
by Bristol Zoo for paid car parking. We had hoped that this would end in 2009, but ...

and the Avon Gorge.
